FAQs
The answer to this depends on your age and whether you are training intensely.
If you are simply aiming to have a healthy diet and not training intensely, then your recommended daily intake of protein from all sources is listed on the NZ Nutrition Foundation website.A brief summary is below:
Women aged 19-70 46g per day
Women over 70 57g per day
Breastfeeding women 67g per day
Pregnant women 60g per day
Teenage boys 14-18 65g per day
Teenage girsl 14-18 45g per day
Men aged 19-70 64g per day
Men over 70 81g per day
If you are aiming to gain muscle or are an active athlete engaging in intense exercise, your daily protein requirements will be higher than those outlined above. The reason for this is that when muscles are used intensely, the muscle protein myoglobin breaks down and needs to be repaired. This rebuilding process leads to growth of the muscle fibres and therefor requires an intake of protein over and above the level we need to simply get by. In a 2017 article published in The Journal of Nutrition, it was found that the daily protein requirements of young male bodybuilders was between 1.2 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of body weight.
This is a tricky question and really depends on the person, their goals and their budget.

Whey is produced when manufacturing cheese - the curds separate from the whey and are dried to make cheese. Whey is a liquid, that is then dried to form whey protein concentrate. This contains 80% protein.
Whey protein isolate is produced when the whey protein concentrate undergoes a another stage of filtration to remove as much of the fat and carbohydrates as possible. This results in a protein powder which contains 93% protein and very low amounts of carbohydrates and fat. This gives it a less creamy and thinner consistency.
