Amanda Johnson (née Wynne) is a New Zealand Registered Dietitian and Registered Nutritionist and has over 15 years experience working as a nutrition advisor to the food industry and working in media communications, writing and editing. From June 2003 until January 2006, Amanda was the Public Relations Officer and National Media Spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association (BDA). Prior to this, Amanda worked for the New Zealand Dietetic Association (recently rebranded as Dietitians New Zealand Inc) as their Executive Director (2001 to 2002). Her broad experience has also involved working for the New Zealand Dairy Board as a nutritionist, where she wrote resources for health professionals, consumers and the media. She has also worked as a nutrition scientist for the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF), where she regularly gave expert comment to the media on a variety of nutrition and health issues. While at the BNF, she edited the 258-page Obesity Task Force Report (1999) and authored the BNF briefing paper Meat in the Diet (1999). She has also worked as a nutritionist for the UK Meat and Livestock Commission.
Amanda has written numerous articles on nutrition-related topics for both consumer and health professional press. She has co-authored two books - Nutrition: A Handbook for Community Nurses (2001) and The Power of Positive Eating, the latter was published both in New Zealand (2002) and in the UK (2003). She has also recently written two significant scientific reports, one on The Role of Red Meat in a Healthy New Zealand Diet (2009) and one on The Role of Seafood in a Healthy New Zealand Diet (2010). Over the last five years, Amanda has worked on a freelance basis for a number of New Zealand food companies, writing resources, developing recipes, and providing nutritional analysis. She has written food fact sheets and press information for Dietitians New Zealand Inc (the professional association for dietitians in New Zealand), on topics such as fad diets, detox diets, pregnancy, breastfeeding, starting solids, the HCG diet, omega 3 fatty acids and nutrition supplements. In addition, she is currently a member of the Dietitians NZ PR Committee. She has also provided advice and writing services to the NZ Nutrition Foundation.
Amanda is a prolific writer and has written for magazines such as Healthy Food Guide and Little Treasures. She is also currently an advisor to the New Zealand Science Media Centre, specialising in nutrition and health issues.
